Traffic Controller - Stop / Slow

This course will provide the skills and knowledge required to control vehicle and pedestrian traffic using a stop-slow bat, hand signals and approved communication devices in the resources and infrastructure industries.

How will the course be delivered?

Face-to-Face Delivery

• Theory & Simulated Practical:

o Approx. 8 hours in the classroom, covering theory and simulated practical components.

o Assessment is open book and completed progressively throughout the day.

o Two (2) simulation exercises are completed at the end of the day.

• Practical (Industry Placement):

o Learners must complete a minimum of 20 hours of on-site practical experience at roadwork sites.

o Placement must be supervised by an experienced, accredited Queensland traffic controller.

o Placement hours must be completed within the timeframe specified in the Placement Contract (currently 90 days from course commencement).

• Final Assessment:

o Conducted after the learner has completed the minimum 20 hours of practical placement.

o Assesses knowledge and skills in stop/slow and related duties (approx. 30–60 mins).

Renewal - Traffic Controller - Stop / Slow

This Nationally Recognised course will provide participants with the skills and practical knowledge to set out, monitor and close traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes in civil construction and maintenance.

It is a requirement of the Department of Transport and Main Roads QLD (TMR) that traffic management implementers renew their Qld TMI card every 3 years.

How will the course be delivered?

Verification

Third Party Report (TPR) with evidence to confirm a minimum of 32 hours of Stop/Slow in the past 12 months and TPR must be supported with:

o TGS diagrams

o Risk assessments, pre-starts, or toolbox talks signed by the learner

o Signage sheets

Face-to-Face Delivery

• Theory:

The face-to-face theory is approximately eight (8) hours. The assessment is open book and will be completed gradually throughout the day.

Prerequisites - Renewal Only

To be eligible for this course, learners must:

• Hold a current QLD Traffic Control Industry Authority, or an equivalent licence from another Australian state.

• Hold a General Construction Induction Card (White Card), or equivalent, prior to enrolment.

• Have held an approved driver’s licence (provisional or open) within the last 5 years.

• Have completed a minimum of 32 hours of stop/slow duties in the previous 12 months prior to the course date, and be able to provide evidence via a third-party report.

• Meet the medical requirements for traffic controllers in QLD, which include the ability to stand for extended periods, and maintaining suitable eyesight and hearing.
